Book Industry Freight Plan

Recommended Carriers

2007 Book Industry Freight Plan Manual

The Book Industry Freight Consolidation Plan uses the strength of the industry as a whole to negotiate special rates with CanPar, National Fast Freight and Universal Logistics for consolidated shipments to most parts of the country. The consolidation is used by booksellers, publishers and printers with reported savings of up to 30% in shipping costs.

Recommended Carriers and Negotiated Rates — The Freight Committee periodically reviews the performance, service, electronic data interchange capabilities and costs of the recommended carriers. Between reviews, it annually negotiates new rates with the carriers for the upcoming year. The current recommendations are as follows:

CANPAR has been selected as the recommended carrier for small parcels of up to 227 kg or 500 pounds. CANPAR delivers 40 million books each year to Canadian booksellers, schools, universities and colleges and libraries. The company has provided excellent service to our members and offers several value-added services – including advanced technology and custom computer solutions to individual customers' shipping and reporting requirements. Negotiations with the committee have resulted in overall base rate increases being held to 3.1% for single and multiple piece shipments. CANPAR will continue to extend a 10% discount to members of the book industry on CANPAR Select Service. Fuel charge increases and decreases are based on posted Canadian average pump prices and are clearly stated on invoices. We recommend that where possible you use CANPAR Book Rate for all your shipping needs up to 227 kg or 500 pounds.

National Fast Freight has again been included by the Book Industry Freight Plan. The negotiated rate increase effective April 1, 2001 is 3%. The current fuel surcharge as of that date is 6%, which is listed separately when billing. As this may change without notice due to market fluctuations, please call for current pricing. National Fast Freight is recommended for all LTL shipments of over 227 kg or 500 pounds originating in Toronto. Shipments leave Toronto daily; check frequency of shipments from other points in Canada. The Roadwing division provides Expedited Services. When you contact National Fast Freight indicate that you wish to receive the Book Industry Freight Plan rate. Once your volume of business has been established, you may request a detailed rate chart.

Universal Logistics has been recommended by the Book Industry Freight Committee for the sixth consecutive year. The company has earned this continued confidence on the strength of a full complement of customs brokerage services at competitive prices.

The Book Industry Freight Committee does not have an air expedited service to recommend that meets its standards of service, reliability and electronic data interchange. A number of possibilities are currently under considerations. Members of the Freight Plan will be notified if successful negotiations with a carrier are completed.

For information on CBA's rates, contact enquiries@cbabook.org.

Group Health and Dental Plan

The success of any organization depends largely on the quality of its staff. Smaller businesses find it difficult to compete for good staff because these individuals often prefer the security and benefits offered by larger employers.

To compound the problem, insurance companies are either unwilling to provide a group benefits package or only offer "small employer" packages that are too restrictive to be of real value. An important and significant advantage of membership in CBA's plan is the opportunity to obtain superior employee benefit coverage tailored to meet the unique and specific requirements of each and every member.

CBA's benefit plan offers flexible options and low cost through the combined volume purchasing power of the Association.

Our benefits program is underwritten by the Co-operators Life Insurance Company, who have significant experience with plans of this type and a strong reputation for service.

Morneau Sobeco Inc., a leading employee benefit consulting firm, has been retained to assist in the development of this program.

There is no minimum group size requirement to take advantage of this program. It is available to groups with as few as one employee. The group benefits program is designed on a core-plus-options approach. Each member group can choose a plan which is best suited to the needs of its owners, managers and staff.

Costs vary depending on the province of residence, age and family status of employees. There is a discount for non-smokers. To find out the actual cost of a plan for your staff, you can contact Morneau Sobeco directly at 1-800-267-0097 and let them know you are a CBA member.

The Core Plan

  • Life Insurance
  • Medical Services & Supplies
  • Accidental Death or Dismemberment Insurance

Options

  • Extended Health Benefits
  • Prescription Drug Coverage
  • Hospital Accommodation & Out of Country Coverage
  • Dental Benefits
  • Long Term Disability Insurance travel plans. There is no minimum group size requirement to take advantage of this program.

For information on CBA's rates, contact Morneau Sobeco directly at 1-800-267-0097 or enquiries@cbabook.org and we will have someone contact you.
